The journey begins…

Hello and welcome to my blog, in which I talk about my experiences of learning to be a web developer. I’m a 39-year-old Londoner and I worked for 15 years in magazine publishing as a writer and editor. But the time feels right for a career change and I’ve been teaching myself to program as a new professional skill, and so far I’m really enjoying it.

I’ve been working through Rob Percival’s excellent course The Complete Web Developer 2.0, which so far has taken a whistle-stop tour through HTML, CSS and Javascript. I learnt a little basic HTML in my journalism postgraduate course, and so far I have found the HTML and CSS modules relatively straightforward.

The Javascript module, being more logic/maths-based, has been the most challenging, but I really like that about it. I always enjoyed puzzles and it feels really nice to be giving my brain a workout for a change.

I’m also taking onboard some of the principles set out in Josh Kemp’s No Degree, No Problem masterplan for programming success, such as applying myself to learning for a minimum of three hours every day. Plus, I’ve picked up a number of programming textbooks which I’ll no doubt get around to discussing on here soon.

It’s a daunting subject and I have so much to learn, but I’m excited about the challenges and I’m hoping this blog will help to keep me on track, give me a chance to reflect on what I have learned, and hopefully also me with others who are on a similar path.

So here’s to a long and fruitful journey of learning to code…
